STRANGE AIR

HOST:

Ladies and gentlemen, I would like to introduce the founder of Convergence, Sebastian King.

SOUND:  Applause

SEBASTIAN:

Thank you.

After earning a degree from Stanford which is currently gathering dust in the back of my closet, I financed my first company with the five thousand dollars I had left in my savings account.  Ten years later, I sold that company for twelve billion dollars.  The financial windfall allowed me to pay off my student loans.  My mother was thrilled.

SOUND:  Laughter

SEBASTIAN:

At the time, everyone wondered what the boy genius would do next.  Startup investors were lining up at my door.  The possibilities were endless.

That’s when I had my calling.

The details of this moment are personal, but I learned something that forced me to see the world in a new light.  So I entered the seminary, I earned my Master of Divinity, and I joined the priesthood on my 35th birthday.  Now my mother was really thrilled.

SOUND:  Laughter

SEBASTIAN:

During this period, my investments, which I had been ignoring, soared.  Twelve billion dollars grew into an outrageous amount that made me one of the richest people in the country.  I had more money than the Vatican.

Billionaire priests are rare, so I had two options.  I could give my fortune away or I could find a new direction, one that would unite both parts of my life, scientific knowledge, and religious faith.  That’s when I was inspired to create Convergence.

Simply stated, our goal is to educate the world that science and religion are not enemies.  They’re allies.  And they can be used in support of each other.

For example, science and religion, working together, easily explain miracles like the parting of the Red Sea.

Drops in water level are usually caused by wind stress acting on the surface for an extended period of time.  As the wind blows, the water recedes and reveals terrain that was formerly underwater.  This phenomenon is called “wind set down”.

In the case of the Red Sea, a sustained wind of great strength exposed a reef that was just below the surface, creating a path at just the right moment for the Israelites to cross.

So was the parting of the Red Sea a miracle or just really good timing?  I believe the timing creates the miracle and the miracle is in the timing.

Thank you and God bless you.
